Doris May Pennington

Doris May Pennington of Ambler, PA passed away suddenly at Abington Memorial Hospital on Monday, October 12, 2009, she was 81.  Born on May 23, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Leonard A Pennington, husband of the late Eleanor Gaerthe Pennington.  Doris attended the "Avenue" schools (Mattison and Forest) and graduated from Ambler High School in 1946.  She won the American Legion Award in 1942, was senior class secretary, girl's basketball manager, and member of the National Honor Society.  She received a B.S. in Business Education from Beaver College in 1950 and went on to Temple University earning an elementary Education Certificate and a master's in Reading Education. 

Doris worked as a bookkeeper for JW Craft & Sons Lumber Company until 1951 when she was appointed to teach kindergarten for the Ambler Borough School District and it's successor the Wissahickon School District.  She held various positions teaching early elementary and reading.  She has worked for the Borough of Ambler since 1984 and was the Treasurer at her death.   

A lifelong member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Ambler. Doris served a number of committees including;  choir, Junior Department, Education Committee, Membership Secretary, Trustee and as Financial Secretary.  She was also a member of the Administrative Council, Conference Laity Movement, and United Methodist Women.  

She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Ambler Symphony, Friends of The Wissahickon Library, Colony Club, and Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary teacher's society.  Doris was a lifetime member of PSARS, PA PTA, and the Montgomery County Chapter of Retired Teachers.  She was inducted into the Whitpain-Ambler-Wissahickon Alumni Association's Hall of Fame and the Teacher's Hall of Fame.   

Doris traveled extensively, enjoyed puzzles, reading, knitting and the matinees at the Walnut Street Theater.   

Doris is survived by a brother, Leonard A., of Tarpon Springs Fl, one niece and six nephews.   

A service of burial and committal will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 10am at the gravesite in Whitemarsh Memorial Cemetery.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 11am at Calvary United Methodist Church, Ambler, PA.  The Rev. Sukja Bang, presiding.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Calvary United Methodist Church.
