Hans G. Peckmann, a long time resident of Ambler, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2016, at Spring House Estates in Lower Gwynedd. He was 83. Mr. Peckmann was born in Glen Cove, NY, and lived in Mill Neck during his childhood. He was the son of the late Karl and Adelhied (Behrje) Peckmann. He graduated from Glen Cove High School in 1949. Hans first attended Champlain College in NY on an ice hockey scholarship from 1949-1950. He then decided to attend Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA, where he graduated in 1955. Hans was a member of Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) fraternity, served as Vice President of the Inter-Fraternity Council, played club hockey, and was a four-year member of the men's soccer team and earned All-American Honors. He was also the recipient of the Alumni Achievement Award in 1979. Upon graduation, Hans spent the next 4 years serving in the U.S. Army as part of the 513 th Military Intelligence Unit out of Ft. Knox, Kentucky and was stationed in Germany. After serving in the military, Hans joined Bell Telephone of PA, where he held management positions with network distribution construction and fleet operations for Bell of Pennsylvania, Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone and eventually Bell Atlantic. He retired after a rewarding 35 year career. Hans was also a member of the Rotary Club of North Penn and had served as President and Assistant District Governor. After retirement, Hans spent much of his time as the Property Chairman at Upper Dublin Lutheran Church and was on the Building Committee. He also volunteered at the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association and helped with their Maple Sugaring Festivals. He loved to spend time outdoors and enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, playing tennis and the piano. Those who knew Hans also knew his dog, Heidi. In addition to his parents, Hans was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Marianna (Harder) Peckmann, and a twin brother, Karl A. Peckmann. He is survived by a daughter, Pamela D. Berntsen, and son-in-law, Steven, of Chalfont, and a son, Karl H. Peckmann, and daughter-in-law, Regina, of York, PA. Hans (or "Opa") is also survived by five grandchildren; Rebecca, Erik, Kristen, Kevin and Alec, along with his sister-in-law, Ruth Van Sciver Peckmann and niece, Jeanette Benson. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 10, at 11:00 a.m. at Upper Dublin Lutheran Church, 411 Susquehanna Road, Ambler, PA 19002. Family and friends may also call from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45. Interment will follow the service at Rose Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Muhlenberg College, Alumni Office, 2400 Chew Street, Allentown, PA 18104 or Upper Dublin Lutheran Church, Memorial and Legacy Fund, 411 Susquehanna Road, Ambler, PA 19002.
