Lucia McMichael

January 1, 1922 — October 12, 2015

Lucia McMichael of Maple Glen, PA, passed away on October 12, 2015. She was 93. Born in Yonkers, NY, on January 1, 1922, she was the daughter of Sidney Taylor Adair and Lucia Allen Adair, and the oldest of 4 children. By age one, her family relocated to Baltimore. She attended school there until age 11, when her family moved "back home" to Richmond, Virginia. She received the rest of her education in Richmond, graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School and attending the University of Richmond. Lucia also studied voice in both Richmond and New York City. She was a soprano soloist at a number of churches and sang the role of Sonia, the Merry Widow, in the Richmond Opera Group's production of The Merry Widow in 1949. After working as a secretary and a department store buyer in Richmond for a number of years, Lucia caught the adventure bug. She and a group of friends left in 1954 to explore the country. After stops in San Antonio (where Lucia met her future husband, Harold) and Denver, the friends decided to settle in San Francisco. It was a short stay, as Lucia returned to Richmond to marry in 1955. She and Harold then lived in Houston, Texas for 5 years before moving to Maple Glen in 1961. Maple Glen was home for the family for 52 years, until Lucia moved to Gwynedd Estates in 2013. In addition to raising her 3 children and her cats, and pursuing an avid bird-watching hobby, she worked as a bookkeeper for Desmond Hotels. But her true calling was serving her church. She was an elder at Supplee Presbyterian Church, led the prayer chain for a number of years, served on the pastor nominating committee, and was an active member of the Elizabeth Circle and two Bible study groups. Lucia's family, son Bruce, daughter Lynn Murphy and her husband Michael, daughter Jane Meneely and her husband Eric, and three grandchildren, Christina, David, and Timothy Murphy, have been blessed with her love throughout her life. She will be missed. Relatives and friends are invited to Lucia's memorial service at Supplee Presbyterian Church, 855 E. Welsh Road, Maple Glen, on Monday October 19, 2015 at 10:00 AM. Rev. Dr. Donald Hoagland will officiate. A graveside service at Whitemarsh Memorial Park, Ambler, will follow. Friends and family may call at the church from 9:15 AM Monday to celebrate Lucia's life and reflect on the joy she brought to all of us.In lieu of flowers, please donate in Lucia's name to the Supplee Presbyterian Church Dominican Republic Mission Trip Fund, 855 E. Welsh Road, Maple Glen, PA 19002.
