Lawrence Richard McCarty

Lawrence Richard McCarty, 92, of Fort Washington, PA, died peacefully on January 8, 2022, at Abington Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joan Ellen Hinkson and died on her birthday. They are together again.

Lawrence is survived by his brothers Daniel and Robert McCarty and preceded in death by his sister Lynne. He is also survived by his seven children, his daughters Danielle Yemm and spouse Terry, Kathleen Bianchini and spouse Rick, Moira Moore and spouse Tim, Sarah McCarty and fiancé Wesley Vesterby and his sons Larry and spouse Rebecca, Patrick and spouse Karen, and Terry and partner Nicole Durette. Additionally, Lawrence is survived by his 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Lawrence was born in Philadelphia to Daniel and Maryon McCarty on December 16, 1929. He attended North Catholic High School. He graduated from LaSalle University with a B.A. in Spanish Language. Lawrence served in the U.S Army before continuing his education at La Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México where he earned his M.A. in Spanish American Literature. In 1993 he earned his PhD in Spanish American Literature and a minor in Brazilian Literature from Temple University. Lawrence joined the faculty of the Spanish Department at Penn State University, Abington Campus upon his return from Mexico, and worked as the Chief Advisor of the Liberal Arts Department for nine years. He then took the position as Chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages at the Community College of Philadelphia (CCP). While at CCP, he initiated a summer work-study program for Latino students and taught English as a second language as a volunteer at the North Philadelphia Night School. Lawrence’s awards include an honorary membership in the National Hispanic Honor Society, Sigma Delta Mu and the National Hispanic Honor Society for Colleges and Universities, Sigma Delta Pi. He enjoyed volunteering for many organizations including Habitat for Humanity International, Witness for Peace, People and Stories, and Project Home. In his spare time, he enjoyed bird watching, playing tennis, writing poetry, dancing the tango, hiking at Fort Washington State Park, and the beautiful Cape May, NJ beaches & sunsets with his family and friends. Lawrence loved the arts of Philadelphia including the Philadelphia Orchestra and the city’s many museums.

The funeral mass will be private for immediate family only. Mass will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at 10:30 AM in Ambler, PA at Saint Anthony's Catholic Church. For our many loving friends, the mass will be live streamed and can be accessed here .

Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Huntington Valley, PA. We will hold a celebration of life in the next few months.

In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to the to the following organizations Witness for Peace, People and Stories, Project Home, and the Cape May Bird Sanctuary.
